2009-07-01 · It was opening day for grayling. Due to the abundant insect hatches brought on by the warm weather, the grayling would be in a feeding frenzy. Although I was excited about the best grayling fishing of the year, I wondered how well my two friends would get along, one being a city boy and a fan of ABBA and the other being a dead ringer for the Marlboro Man.

Fly Fishing for Alaska Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Salmon or Dolly Varden; only 15% of Alaska is accessed by road, the rest is affectionately termed “The Bush”. Getting to remote locations is a great part of these trips and while there are many pilots willing to take on the task, we will only fly with a select group of pilots because after all, Safety is our number one priority.
Guided fishing tours are the best option for fishing Montana grayling, as local guides often know the best areas to find the grayling when they shoal. Because grayling shoal, if your guide can locate one, there’s almost certain to be more where that came from. This tributary of the Kenai River flows alongside the Sterling Highway, just north of Cooper Landing (from milepost 40 – 45). There are plenty of designated pull-offs along the highway — like Quartz Creek Road, which leads to Kenai Lake, as well as the popular access point at the Quartz Creek Bridge.
